University of Utah Marriott Library Renovation & Addition
Salt Lake City, UT
Project Description
Marriott Library’s Renovation project transformed the library, originally built in 1967, into an innovative learning center for the 21st Century. The 302,000sf renovation created a state-of-the-art information commons, a new campus hub, and electronic multimedia classrooms. The flagship of the renovation is the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS). This area is approximately 13,000sf with an overall volume of 704,000sf, is four stories tall, and can hold up to two million items. It contains four robotic cranes that retrieve items from one of the 19,000 bins. Patrons are able to request any item for pick-up within 10 minutes. The ASRS gives the University a permanent records storage area that safeguards and protects the rare and valuable books and manuscripts while at the same time providing easier public access to these materials.  The roof of the ASRS was transformed into a new Garden Terrace where events can be held in an open-air garden setting with spectacular views of the valley.
