PROJECTS    JUSTICE    UTAH STATE PRISON RELOCATION
Utah State Prison Relocation
Salt Lake City, UT
Project Description
The 1.3 million-gsf development near the edge of the Great Salt Lake operates much like a mini city—complete with its own road network, utilities, and a variety of facilities. The new prison focuses on rehabilitation and reducing recidivism with expanded programming, state-of-the-art physical and mental health facilities, and innovations in housing and design that encourage positive behavioral changes. The new complex showcases some of the most progressive ideology and innovative design for detention facilities. Spanning 191 improved acres and comprising 37 buildings, the Utah State Correctional Facility was one of the largest construction projects in the state’s history. The campus includes maximum security detention buildings and level II dorms for men and women with space for 3,600 inmates, mental-health housing, substance-abuse treatment, medical facilities, classrooms, kitchens, laundry facilities, chapels, and more. The site layout and design also include room for future expansion if needed, but the hope is, it won’t. The design of the facility seeks to normalize the prison experience as much as possible, while still maintaining security and safety.
