LDS Nauvoo Historic District Phase 1
Nauvoo, IL
Project Description
Latter-day Saint exiles from Missouri bought this small swamp town of Commerce in late 1839 and renamed it “Nauvoo” (a Hebrew word meaning “beautiful place”), building it into one of the most populous cities in Illinois before moved West in 1845. Since 1962,Nauvoo Restoration Inc has periodically restored historic buildings and residences for public tours.
This project was the first phase of the latest restoration plan, consisting of the Orson Hyde, William Weeks, and William Gheen homes, and the reconstruction of the Edward Hunter home. Extensive measures were taken to preserve original historic materials wherever possible. Project scope also included extensive landscaping and pathways around each home and a pavilion built only using historic building methods. What Our Clients Are Saying
